straight to our senior congressional correspondent dana bash. she's watching what's going on. dana, the tax rates, first of all, let's get to a major sticking point right now. there's been a counterproposal from house republicans to the white house. you have details. >> reporter: that's right. let's start exactly where you just began on those tax rates because that has become the big divide between the two sides. the answer is the house republicans are not budging. they still want to continue the bush era tax rates at all income levels. let's get specific. first of all, the counterproposal, they say they would get about $800 billion in savings from what they call tax reform, from deductions and closing loopholes, things like that. but the bush era tax rates, all of them would remain, even for the wealthiest. to show you the difference, compared to the white house offer that they got last week, $1.6 trillion in savings when it comes to tax revenue. but much of that came from raising tax rates for the wealthiest americans, which of course is what president obama campaigned on. so those are th
ideas we can all support. >> dana, is any of that going to make a difference or maybe a broader point is how much are outside groups generally, whether it's on the hill or on tv influencing this debate? >> if it works as well as karl rove's effort during the campaign, i think the president is going to ask him to run more of those ads because it didn't work out so well for him the last time. this is a little different from a political campaign in that spending by interest groups is probably not going to be big enough to crowd out all of this noise that's being made here. i think that interview you just had with tom price was extraordinary for what he didn't say. he didn't say i won't allow taxes to increase. he said it depends on what the overall package is. that's an extraordinary admission is for one of the most conservative congressmen in the house and i think it shows where these guys are headed. >> when you look at the polls and you see how the messaging is working, susan, and to what we've been talking, about the pressure that these republicans feel, in fact there are even some d

: dana, we have a light rain here on ocean beach. the wind is whipping but for ocean beach standards this is a moderate breeze. they have just finished today the clean-up from last week's sewage spill. and city officials say they have been checking drains and manholes to be sure they don't have to come back out here again. it will be a busy weekend for you. >> absolutely. this is when we go into overdrive. >> reporter: the spokesman for the san francisco public utilities commission says city crews will be hard at work this weekend making sure the water and sewage systems can hand the expected rain. just last week a downpour forced sewage on to ocean beach. could it happen again. we hope not. we have done everything we could. we have cleared the system to have all the capacity to deal with the water this weekend. >> reporter: that unexpected leak of untreated water has happened before. six years ago. separately there are occasional discharges in the ocean not accidents. they are part of what the city calls its combined system. a system that combines sewage with rain runoff running thr
montgomery, thank you. i want to start there with dana bash here in a moment. because the fiscal cliff debate is starting to sound like, you know, a high stakes game of chicken. there is all kinds of tough talk. no action. right now democrats and republicans are refusing to compromise on this key sticking point, how to get more money from wealthy people. president obama, you know the deal, he wants to raise tax rates for the wealthy. house speaker john boehner wants to close tax loopholes, limit deductions for the wealthy. let's stay on the hill here, let's talk to senior congressional correspondent dana bash. we know the speaker -- we know speaker boehner met with conservative republicans today. did he get any backlash today from his plan? >> reporter: you know what, interestingly it doesn't seem like he did. we know that conservatives are not happy with the idea that their own house republican leadership proposed a plan that includes $800 billion in new revenue. we have seen -- reported on it extensively yesterday and the day before about the e-mail alerts that conservative groups have put
